Michiel Folkers, a contemporary artist from Amsterdam, known for his colorful collage artworks. Mostly made from posters he gets from the streets, festival posters, but also A4 pages from missing cats.
He adds new life to these posters in his Amsterdam based studio. Sustainable (art), happens to be a hip concept, but Michiel especially likes the look and feel of those old, faded posters. That raw effect, actually a piece of wall imitation on canvas.
In recent years, his art has been spreaded all over the world. Exhibitions in New York, Zurich, London. His work is particularly popular in the USA. A Desperate Housewife but also a Cypress Hill member has recently sold his work.
Michiel will be exhibiting in the Kapel (an old monastery) in the Beatrixpark in Amsterdam during the week from 18 to 23 December. After 3 months of solitary in his studio, he will exhibit 18 new works. Still in the category ‘Urban Contemporary’ but not exclusively collages. Because the exhibition is closely to his 36th birthday, he wants to show which elements in life have influenced where he is today. And especially the things where he got his inspiration from. The city, nature, the night, love….
‘People often ask me where I get my inspiration from. I can never answer that question properly. I will try to do this with this exhibition. In my opinion, inspiration is not a flurry thought. But a collection of a lot of good and bad experiences in life. And sometimes something nice comes out of that.’
